Summit School Unveils New Sensory Rooms to Support Student Well-Being

Updated: Oct 24

At Summit School, we are excited to announce the upcoming opening of six brand-new sensory rooms, specially designed to enhance the emotional and sensory regulation of our students. These rooms are a part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the diverse needs of our students and promoting a calm, balanced, and productive learning environment.

Why More Sensory Rooms?

The need for additional sensory rooms has become increasingly clear as our student population faces growing challenges in emotional and sensory regulation.

In response, we have created six new sensory rooms, each assigned to a specific team (CASP JR, CASP SR, CHALLENGES, MODIFIED PRIMARY, LHA, and TECC), located close to classrooms for easy access. This proximity allows students to access these spaces as needed throughout the day, helping them to regulate their sensory input and return to class ready to learn and participate.

The Benefits for Students

Designed by our experienced Occupational Therapists, each sensory room is tailored to meet the unique needs of the students in its assigned team. Sensory rooms can be calming, active, or hybrid spaces, offering a variety of sensory experiences to help students find the right balance for their needs. By providing students with well-dosed sensory input in a controlled environment, these rooms promote a state of calm and focus, enabling students to return to class feeling more connected and ready to engage with their peers and activities.

As each student’s sensory needs are unique and may change throughout the day, our OTs will train staff to observe student responses and guide them toward the sensory activities that will best support their immediate needs. This individualized approach ensures that every student has access to the sensory regulation tools they require, improving their overall well-being and enhancing their ability to participate fully in the school day.

The Role of Occupational Therapists at Summit

Our full team of Occupational Therapists plays a vital role in supporting the development and success of our students. OTs at Summit work to help students build the skills they need to be as independent as possible in their daily tasks, whether at school, home, or in the community. This includes supporting sensory regulation and processing, motor skills, visual perception, and organizational skills.

In addition to working with students directly, OTs train staff and lead class groups that focus on sensory strategies, sensory motor skills, fine motor tasks, handwriting, keyboarding, and daily living skills. For students with more specific needs, OTs also provide individual therapy sessions, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to thrive.

A Unique Opportunity for Summit Families

Summit School is proud to offer a full Occupational Therapy team dedicated to supporting the success and independence of every student. Parents can feel confident knowing that their children have access to specialized professionals who are trained to help them navigate their sensory and motor challenges, ensuring they can fully participate in all school activities.
